After a slow start, Al Shorta dominated the match at Karbala International Stadium, producing almost twice as many shots on goal as their Uzbek opponents but were unable to capitalise on their dominance as the tie ended goalless.
“Today we played with three strikers and Pakhtakor could not pose any threat to us because we had fully learned their style of play,” said Salah.
“We missed a lot of chances to score goals. Luck was not on our side today. I have never seen such a situation in my coaching career. This is the first time I am leading a team that missed so many opportunities.”
The result left both Al Shorta and Pakhtakor still seeking a win after three matches.
Pakhtakor head coach Kamoliddin Tadjiev felt his charges were not at their physical best and was relieved not to be punished for it.
“We played a difficult game,” said Tadjiev. “It took us a long time to get here. The condition of the field also made it difficult to play combination football. Fatigue was evident in the second half. Nevertheless, thanks to the players who fought to the end. We kept our defence intact.
“We could have won if we had played better, but fatigue took its toll. We still have games ahead of us. We will try to win them and continue the fight to get to the next level.”
A daunting trip to Jeddah awaits Al Shorta next on November 4 when they face a perfect Al Ahli Saudi FC while there will be an opportunity for Pakhtakor to end their winless run when they welcome Al Rayyan SC the next day.
